Birthdays…the day we celebrate another year of life. Feb. 18 my Mom turned 80 years young. I know she doesn’t always feel that way, she will tell you, 80 years old, but I see it different.
My mom is young at heart and I love the fact that I can share with you what an amazing person she is. I do so for 2 reasons. First to celebrate her and let her know how much I love, admire and respect her (plus there isn’t enough room in a Hallmark card!) and second, to share with you an incredible role model she is for us all. I am lucky enough to call her Mom but I assure you she has a heart that shares with many. Let’s just say she is a true Happy Monkey!
Some of you may have met my Mom at an HMC event and some of you know her through other connections but I think you will all agree she is something special.
She has a heart of gold and gives so much of herself to others through volunteering, fundraising, helping a friend, caring for my Dad and always solving problems for her family (my brother and sisters of course, I’m perfect!). Giving back comes naturally for her but I do know it can take it’s toll, so please Mom, don’t forget to give a little back to you, you deserve it.
She lives an active life, traveling, walking, coming to the gym with me once a week and always asking about the next thing she can try. She is always trying to lift and unload things at the lake herself, even when there is a cottage full of young strong men. She is as independent as they come and I love her for that. Please know we are here to help you when you need it.
She is FUN! My mom is game to try anything. Her bucket list is long and she is crossing them off one by one. She loves to play games, she always has a joke to share and when she sees the kids start a game of beer pong at the lake, she is first in line to go kick some butt. Keep being the party planner Mom and I look forward to helping complete that bucket list. Zip-lining in Costa Rica is next!
My Mom is a great cook and baker. From the minute I can remember there was always a meal on the table prepared with love. Growing up, our schedules where crazy with all our activities however, no matter what time you got home there was your home made meal fixed on a plate ready to be heated up. (Sorry kids, I missed out on that gene!) To this day, she is still the hostess with the most-est! Whether it’s a family dinner, weekends at the lake or dropping by for a visit, she always has you covered. I love that she is still asking and looking for healthy recipes and not just settling for toast and boost!
She is the calm before and after the storm. She predicts the stress of others, recognizes when you are down and is always there with a listening ear and her pearls of wisdom. 80 years of experience she uses well. Let’s be honest here, she does create the odd storm too, but we love her for holding true to her values!
My mom truly is a real gem, although she is no different than the rest of us with our insecurities and desires to always be perfect. She worries about her wrinkles, the spots on her hands and has never grown too found of her love handles. Well Mom, I’m here to tell you that you are perfect, in every single way. You are my rock, you are my guide (even though sometimes I carve my own path, I’m listening,) you are beautiful inside and out and I am so proud to be your daughter.
My birthday wish for you is to know how amazing you are and to be at peace with your life and what a great role model you are. There are many who never see there 80th birthday and there are many who do that have lost all independence due to poor health. So, wear 80 proud, keep following your dreams, living a healthy lifestyle and we can celebrate your 90th anywhere in the world!
To all of you monkeys out there who have read this far, I wish for you to be as happy and healthy as my mom for your whole life.
