FOMO, “fear of missing out: anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website.” Oxford English Dictionary
Yikes! Can you believe that our new vocabulary is based on acronyms?
Whether you say the words or use the shortcut, I do believe we have always had a little bit of the fear of missing out throughout our lives. Remember Susie’s birthday party you so wanted to be invited to? Or the high school party with no parents home that your parents said you couldn’t go to? Or the music and laughter coming form the neighbors backyard that you wish you were invited to? The list goes on. However, in the end did you ever really miss out?
Social Media has definitely put a huge magnifying glass on all the wonderful things happening in friends and families lives around you. Sometimes you are in the picture, sometimes you are not. You can’t be everywhere and honestly do you really want to be?
I think there are a few important things to keep in mind with regards to FOMO.
- When you see other peoples posts of travels, fun and celebrations. Be happy for them, wish them a wonderful time and celebrate your own memories of a trip you have been on or a celebration you have been at. Don’t compare.
- Remember that social media is everyone’s highlight real, we all have struggles behind the scenes. Do not judge your life by another persons photos.
- I prefer the acronym JOMO: the Joy of missing out. Feeling content with staying in and disconnecting as a form of self care.
The next time you suffer from FOMO take a moment to step back and reflect on what your true inner self desires, what your values are telling you. Listen to your gut. Sometimes an evening at home relaxing is the perfect choice. Live authentically.
