It’s heart month here in Manitoba. You can expect a friendly neighbor knocking on your door asking if you would like to make a donation to the heart and stroke foundation. I will be one of them and I hope you will consider making a gift. Your contribution goes to research that significantly increases the chance of survival when someone experiences any form of heart disease. It could be someone you love.
What I really want you to consider during the month of February is how can make some simple lifestyle changes so you don’t become a statistic. Doctors and scientists believe that 80% of all disease can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. I like those odds and I play that game every single day by making positive, healthy choices and inspiring others to do the same.
My goal is to die young as old as possible.
Your money can not buy you your health. Your daily choices can.
Where should you begin?
Let’s start with a simple self evaluation. Rate yourself on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being I need work and 5 being, I nailed it!
- I eat 7-12 fruits and vegetables each and every day.
- I get a minimum 20 minutes of exercise 5 days a week.
- I sleep a solid 8 hours each night.
- I drink 2l of water each day.
- I don’t let life stress me out.
- I limit sugar and processed food in my diet.
- I eat only healthy fats
- I don’t smoke
Now add up your score. Take that total and divide by 8. If that number is 3.5 or below, there is room for improvement. If it is 4 or above keep doing what you are doing and encourage others to do the same. You can go back and make note of which areas you struggle in (3.5 or lower.)
Once you have identified the area you need work in, it’s time to make a plan to make change. Change can be hard, but with a good plan, support and the awareness of why it is important to you, anything is possible.
Take a look around you and decide what kind of future you want. One where you are in control? or one where doctors, pills and your children are?
Call me a control freak, I choose the one where I am in control!
