“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery – air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, “This is what it is to be happy.” Sylvia Plath, poet

This quote caught my attention in a magazine the other day and made me smile because happy is exactly how I feel when I am in nature away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Blue skies, fresh air, breath taking scenery and the physical challenge of hiking up and down truly make me happy.

I arrived home Friday after a week of hiking in Arizona with the Happy Monkeys. 10 awesome ladies, pushing their limits physically and pushing some fear limits too. Snakes, heights, caves…it was amazing. We all wrapped up the week feeling inspired, energized and ready to take on life.

The science behind the power of nature is growing. “Nature Bathing” is a real thing…google it! The practice of walking through nature helps to reduce stress and anxiety, reduce heart rate, blood pressure and improve your mood. All of this with no side effects except for creating awesome memories for you to reflect on.

I share this with you to remind you of the power of natural healing available free of charge. No prescription, no side effects just pure happy.

As the weather shifts and warms up it is easier to get outside and enjoy all the benefits of nature. Please don’t feel you need to travel far, there are many great trails and hikes right in your back yard. When you are outside, take time to breathe deep, notice your 5 senses and feel the happiness flood over you.

What do you have planned for the spring and summer? HMC offers local city walks (join us this Thursday, April 18), hooky days in Pinawa (first one coming up May 9) and watch for surprise hike days where we explore cool trails within an hour and half of the city. It’s all on our website under events.

Get outdoors and find your happy in the power of nature.
